Frescobaldi Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva 2022

Wine Spectator #31 Wine of the Year (Top 100 Wines of 2025)

92 Points, James Suckling – 90 Points, Wine Spectator – 90 Points, Vinous

This is a big-time super vibrant Sangiovese with great intensity right out of the gates. Every year, this is one of Tuscan’y top values, but in the vintage that it broke through to #31 Wine of the Year, from Wine Spectator, this wine reaches heights never before seen for a Rufina Riserva.  James Suckling called this “A sure bet for Tuscan red, with lower alochol” in his 92-point review. Vinous called it “soft, open-knit and easy to like.” This is true – this is a crowd pleaser in every sense. Great with food, maybe even better on its own – this is a Chianti for the ages from one of the most consistently excellent families in Italian winemaking.

92 Points, James Suckling
“Aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, cloves, sandalwood and rosemary. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins and crispness giving it tension and brightness. Sangiovese with touches of malvasia and merlot. A sure bet for Tuscan red, with lower alcohol.”

90 Points, Wine Spectator (#31 Wine of 2025)
“Dark cherry, plum, earth and tobacco flavors are enmeshed in the lush texture of this broad red. There are solid tannins and bright acidity for support as this fades on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2030.”

90 Points, Vinous
The 2022 Chianti Rufina Riserva is soft, open-knit and very easy to like. Plush contours wrap around a core of red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, spice and rose petal. Floral overtones pull it all together on the finish.

Frescobaldi’s story is one that is very closely connected with the history of Tuscany. Sitting just outside of Florence at the high point of the medieval old-town, the Frescobaldis  were previous patrons of major works in Florence, such as Santa Trinita Bridge and the Basilica of Santo Spirito.

For the last 700 years, they’ve been growing wine in Tuscany. Slowly and carefully they have purchased estates which have given them access to all sorts of terroir throughout some of the most prime locations in all of Tuscany.

With properties along the hills of Montalcino, throughout Nipozzano to the hidden gem of Castello Pomino all the way up to Tenuta Ammiraglia by the sea and Tenuta Perano in the heart of Chianti Classico, the wines made here all tell profoundly different stories.
