Having spent time at both Opus One and Clos du Val, Winemaker Kian Tavakoli brings a wealth of knowledge in Napa Valley to the team at Faustini Wines. What lured him to this project was pretty obvious: the opportunity to make Cabernet Sauvignon in his own style from some of the most elite Cabernet vineyards in the world. Whether it be Beckstoffer Dr Crane in St. Helena, Galleron Road in Rutherford, Howell Mountain, or Coombsville Vineyard, each brings with it incredible prestige and uniqueness. For Kian, the choice was an easy one.
In the excellent 2016 vintage in Napa, Kian had little work to do. With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the vineyard of the very same name located in the Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated vineyard known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and some of the big A listers that source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
It has classic notes of apple, pear and tropical and peach aromas. On the palate, the integrated oak compliments the lifted acidity beautifully, with a layered and full-bodied palate profile, leading to a refreshing, vibrant and balanced finish.
Following the super quick sell out of the remaining 2019 vintage, we’re onto the brand new vintage and to a Chardonnay that is already drinking beautifully. An inviting nose opens with fresh citrus and lemon notes. So juicy, bright and well-balanced – it’s classic Caymus, rich and hedonistic with a wonderful creaminess. This is the very first of the 2020 vintage and not many folks have this yet. Don’t wait too long to get your hands on these.
Jayson Chardonnay has Pahlmeyer prints all over it. It’s a gorgeoeus, racy Chard that opens with notes of orange blossom, jasmine and freshly sliced pears. In the glass, the wine evolves and deepens, adding bright and zesty hints of creamy lemon meringue, tart citrus fruit and a splash of minerality. On the palate, the wine’s lively acidity is balanced with rich notes of pear, tangerine and baked apricot, wrapped up with a hint of caramel and vanilla on smooth and creamy finish.
This is fantastic 1er Cru Chablis grown on precious Kimmeridgian soil facing Les Blanchots, west of Montée de Tonnerre from one of the most underrated spots in Burgundy. It’s textbook Chablis that slowly unveils incredible depth and sophistication in the glass. One of those rare wines that’s different with almost every passing sip – especially as it warms a bit. Consequently, there’s a myriad of flavors that dart to and fro: pineapple, grapefruit, fresh mint, wildflower, wet stone, apple…all delightful and with that famous Chablis cut.
Nicholas #2 Wine of the Year, 2021
The 2020 Clos Julien Chard is a quintessential example of California coastal Chardonnay, zippy-fresh and long on the palate. This one comes bristling with energy right out of the gates. It’s a flawlessly crafted single-vineyard Chardonnay– as bright and refreshing as you could want, it hits with clean, pristine green apple fruits, pears and citrus notes with great minerality and a lingering, bright finish. It’s a fantastic wine year round and goes well with so many things in the kitchen.
