Far Niente has achieved everything a winery sets out to accomplish between its Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel single vineyard bottlings. Wine Enthusiast recently called Nickel & Nickel “the leader of single vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet,” a statement which is hardly refutable.
Together, they represent the best of each vintage in Napa Valley, though at price tags that are understandably high. The regular cab will set you back $150– if you could ever get your hands on it, and the Nickel and Nickel single-vineyard wines will also now set you back three figures.
However, I’m most excited about the latest Cabernet project by team Far Niente – an unassuming offering called Post & Beam. From the same vineyard sources, winemaking facilities and winemakers of the famed Napa winery, the Post & Beam is a Cabernet Sauvignon that’s meant to be enjoyed in its youth.
Drawn from select younger parcels from their Oakville and Coombsville sites in their impressive vineyard collection, the 2018 Post & Beam features boisterous notes of juicy plum and dark cherry and blackberry fruit. Silky smooth tannins and impressive dark fruit make this an ideal Napa Valley Cab – especially when you consider the price.
The Mascot is a blend of Harlan, Bond and Promontory barrels, Cabernet Sauvignon from some of the most spectacular vineyards in the Napa Valley. It’s a bit steep, a Saturday nighter for sure. But when you consider Harlan Estate goes for about $1000 a bottle and Bond and Promontory come in around $500, the Mascot almost looks like a Tuesday nighter. Almost..
If you’re a fan hedonistic Howell Mountain Cabernet, then this should be missed. Packed with immense fruit, this is a Napa Valley powerhouse. Ruby-garnet in color this bold wine presents bright cherry flavors with nuanced undertones of chocolate and clove. Beautiful tannins prop up a sophisticated and persistent finish that just goes on for days.
If you haven’t yet had any of the wines from Castello di Volpaia, now is the perfect time to change that. This one, their most affordable in the crowd, is their bid for Nicholas the ultimate Super Tuscan Bargain of the Year. A predominantly Sangiovese blend that also features Cabernet, the “Citto” is made in 100% stainless steal vats to properly showcase the intense and vibrant youthful fruit. The perfect compliment to pizza, this is one to drink now while it’s fresh, silky and oh so juicy.
The 2017 Elouan Oregon Pinot Noir is wonderfully ripe, with vibrant flavors of rich cranberry, sweet cinnamon and bright cherry with just a touch of earthiness. It’s packed with fruit and finishes with soft, refined tannins. It’s a great choice for a summer red, delicious by itself or pair with just about anything.
