Simply put, the Torres Family are the top dogs throughout Spain. They have historical connections to Penedes, Conca de Barbera, Priorat, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, you name it.
Their family name carries great weight as evidenced by their 10 straight years atop Drinks International most admired European brands and for great reason: they’ve ruled the roost in Spain for generations and produced unrivaled quality.
Recently, I had the pleasure of tasting a few of their wines from the Priorat region, home to Spain’s most expensive and age-worthy Reds. The big boys here stand toe to toe with top-shelf Bordeaux. L’Ermita from Alvaro Palacios recently earned a perfect score from the Wine Advocate. It goes for $1400/btl. The famous Clos Erasmus bottling will run you about $175/bottle at least when it’s released, before it quickly spikes in the secondary market.
But to find the best values in Priorat, I rely exclusively on the family with the best reputation for making them. They even have a “secret” weapon that they argue is the highest quality Priorat for the money made anywhere. That’s pretty tough to argue against.
Pulled from steep slopes at the foot of the Sierra del Montsant, the Secret de Priorat from the Torres Family is a gorgeous blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah made off llicorella slate soils. It’s medium-palate yet delicate with an opaque shade, packed with blackberries, blueberries and spicy peppery notes. It’s compact yet manages to stay velvety and finished polished and long.

“Attractive nose, imbedded with copious red-berry and sweet strawberry notes, as well as hints of sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs. Nimble, medium-bodied palate with a juicy, concentrated core of red fruit. Silky, polished and succulent. Drink now”

“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard opens with provocative ferrous, crushed rocks and tar notes over a core of crème de cassis, redcurrant jelly and raspberry leaves with a hint of wild fungi. The medium to full-bodied palate is taut with tension and jam-packed with pure black and red fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins, finishing with uplifting mineral sparks. This energetic beauty needs some time. Give it a good 4-5 years in bottle and drink it over the next 25 years+.”
Robert Foley’s Shelter Cabernet Sauvignon is our most popular Cabernet and finally returns after a few year hiatus. Dark purple on the rim, with aromas of black fruits, smoked meats, baking spice and a touch of sweet oak. It’s a big, round full-bodied wine with a nice acid backbone and a long, smooth finish. You can definitely drink these now (at this point, they’re seven years old) but there’s still a life ahead of them so tuck several away for a few more years.
Chad’s 2020 McKinley Springs Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is drop dead gorgeous. Those of you who were lucky to catch our sneak preview when we put it in our Gobbler Case can attest. Dark purple to the rim with aromas of black fruits, violets, creme de cassis and a hint of spice. On the palate, full-bodied, round and juicy with elegance and the gorgeous, pure fruit– red and black currants, blackberries and a touch of sweet tobacco.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
