93 Points, Joaquin Hidalgo – Vinous
The 2022 Red Clos Ancestral combines 45% Moneu, 35% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha Negra, all sourced from Penedès. Sixty percent of the wine was aged for ten months in used barrels, and the Moneu spent the same time in amphorae. On the nose, it offers strawberry and cherry aromas along with a faintly leafy note. Dry and lean, the cleansing palate lingers with a saline, chalky texture. Delicious and thirst-quenching.
The Torres name carries a ton of weight in the wine world, and for good reason. They’ve had five generations of elite winemaking in Spain dating back to 1870, are responsible for pioneering Bordeaux varieties in the country in the 60s, and then circling back to resurrect native grapes starting as far back as the 1980s. These folks aren’t following any trends – they’re setting them.
Most of this can be chalked up to superior planning and staying two steps ahead – but the Torres Family also got a little lucky. While recovering and restoring some of Catalonia’s viticultural heritage, they noticed that some of the indigenous varieties they were planting like Moneu and Garnacha Negra from Penedes not only have great blending potential, but they’re also highly resistant to heat and drought, making them the perfect grapes for the 21st century.
