Elijah Craig Nicholas Single Private Barrel 10-Year Bourbon Whiskey

I don’t know how this one eluded me for so long, but this is our first ever private Single Barrel with Elijah Craig. This is a sensational value, especially when you take into account that I tasted dozens of samples picking out the right barrel for us and it’s a 10-year Kentucky Bourbon. This is an absolute beauty from floor 5 – and Rickhouse MM. It’s as smooth and flavorful as they come, with mellow, inviting notes of candied nuts, dried fruit, honey syrup, caramel and dark chocolate with a finish full of vanilla oak and spices.

Reverend Elijah Craig was a multi-talented figure in early Kentucky history, known for his work as a preacher, educator, and businessman, establishing the first paper and wool mills in Georgetown. However, he’s most famous for his pioneering work in distilling, which contributed significantly to the development of bourbon.

In 1789, Elijah Craig became the first distiller to age his whiskey in new charred oak barrels. Some claim that an accidental fire charred his barrels and changed the whiskey inside. Others say he stored his whiskey in former sugar barrels and was impressed with how charring improved the flavor. Unfortunately, no one is around to tell us how it really went down.

Regardless, Elijah Craig knew was onto something big. He spent years of his life refining the barrel charring process, imparting smooth, rich flavor to the spirit that would become known as Bourbon. 250 years later, he is still known as the Father of Bourbon.
