El Mayor Master’s Collection Nicholas Single Barrel #1 Tequila Reposado

Category

The juice here is so pure and elegant, it tastes much more like a $80/bottle of Tequila than one going for half the price, but that’s why I love these single barrel deals so much. The value is insane. This Reposado spent just under 12 months in used bourbon barrels. Golden brown with fresh agave, oak & vanilla. Remarkably smooth finish. This is one of those oddball tequila’s that is good enough to just sip on the rocks but cheap enough to use to make one hell of a margarita.

Six months ago, I was in a barrel tasting when a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to taste a few barrels of tequila. The distiller I was with was sending his used barrels down to El Mayor in Jalisco for tequila aging. I didn’t want to be rude & tell him I was not interested in tasting another overpriced barrel of tequila, so I said sure. The juice was great, like many of the barrels I’ve tasted over the last few years. I said, “It’s great but I’m not interested in another $75 bottle. The market is flooded with those.” That was when I found out the price.
