96 Points, James Suckling
“Lots of blackberries, dark cherries and hints of orange peel and bark in the aromas. Medium- to full-bodied with fine creamy tannins that caress the palate. The tannic tension give this focus and brightness. 85% cabernet sauvignon, 9% cabernet franc and the rest petit verdot. Hard not to drink now, but better in two to three years.”
Of course you all know Dominus Estate, the iconic, cult Napa producer that has made Christian Moueix an even richer, more revered winemaker than he already was from his Bordeaux holdings and solidified his spot amongst the all-time greats.
Othello has been a smaller passion project that he has been keeping close to the vest until now. Moueix, (Le Fleur-Petrus, Trotanoy) the 2008 Decanter ‘Man of the Year’ winner, is a French native who originally made this an exclusive for France and other European markets. But this year, he decided for his 7th iteration to release a minuscule amount to the U.S. market for the first time.
When I say this allocation is rare, I mean it’s rarer than a NY Jets Super Bowl appearance. Out of the measly 15 six-packs earmarked for the entire state of New Jersey, yours truly managed to snag eight of them. That’s more than half the state’s allocation, folks! This is 100% pure Napanook fruit from the same team behind Dominus… just for 1/6 of the price of its big brother!
