Domaine Leflaive is Puligny’s flagship domaine. The revered winery sits between Meursault to the north and Chassagne to the south, in the heart of Burgundy’s “gold coast,” home to the world’s most renowned (and expensive) Chardonnays.
If DRC makes the best Red Burgundy in the world, then Domaine Leflaive makes the best White Burgundy in the world, it’s that simple. Every year, collecting a few bottles of anything they make is a daunting but incredibly rewarding task. The 2018 vintage promises to bring something special, and already has Wine Spectator calling it, “an ideal vintage.”
The Mâcon-Verzé is a stunner. A seamless blend of nine different vineyards from around the domaine, it’s made in a combination of steel, cement and oak giving it a wide variety of flavor profiles. Of course, it’s got incredible length and precision and at the price today, is as good a bargain as exists at Domaine Leflaive.
The 2019 Frenzy Malborough Sauvignon Blanc is a fabulous value white wine, loaded with green apples, pears and white peaches plus a hint of spice. It’s juicy and fresh, the perfect cocktail hour white. It’s what is referred to as the perfect ‘pool wine’. It’s great paired with just about anything or just enjoyed on its own.
95 points, Vinous
Perhaps Ojai’s greatest white wine release to date is the 2018 Chardonnay from the Puerta del Mar Vineyard. PDM or the “door to the sea” is the perfect vineyard to challenge the classically trained winemaker. Perched on the very edge of where grapes can actually get ripe, just a ridge away from the Pacific. The vines struggle mightily – which in excellent vintages means a concentration of flavor and minerality that is absolutely remarkable. 2018 is one of those vintages. Incredibly aromatically complex with a concentration of fruit and mineral backbone generally reserved for Burgundy three times the price.
This wine is textbook Sancerre Blanc from the village of Bué, the highest in elevation in Sancerre with the most calcareous soil. It is a chiseled, tightly wound and incredibly complex Sauvignon Blanc, which I’d argue is one of the best in the world. In the 2019 vintage, the Carrou has a brilliant pale green color and soaring aromatics of green apples, pear and jasmine.
Bright and extremely inviting on the nose with fresh citrus and lemon notes. The wine is expressive, dancing out of the glass with aromas of lemon pie. It’s classic Caymus, rich and hedonistic with a wonderful creaminess. Mer Soleil’s fresh and juicy fruit is balanced perfectly by the new vintage’s vibrant acidity. It’s a winner, for sure.
