Le Haut-Lieu—The original Huet vineyard is nearly 9 hA. It has the richest soils of the domaine’s three crus—a deep limestone-clay—and the wines are generally the estate’s most approachable. In some vintages, small quantities from nearby estate parcels may be added to Le Haut-Lieu.

The deep brown clay soils of the Haut-Lieu plateau provide the typical fruitiness and freshness wonderfully in Huet’s 2019 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec. Ripe pear, tangerine and orange fruits with notes of lemon grass and green pimientos intertwined with very fine chalky and later tobacco notes give a remarkably fine, elegant and harmonious, subtly complex and simply gorgeous bouquet with floral (lime blossom!) and yeasty aromas that are immediately attractive. Delicate and linear on the palate, this is a pure, fresh, bone-dry, lean and textured, highly refined and perfectly interwoven Chenin with persistent purity, finesse, salty-mineral tension and very fine tannins. Highly finessed and so pure and vivacious! This is a chalky picture-book Haut-Lieu that can age for many years, even though it is already dangerously seductive! There was no dry Le Haut-Lieu produced in 2018, but the 2019 is possibly the finest, most delicate and elegant I’ve had in recent years, at least at this early stage. A terrific and buoyant Vouvray that any Chenin lover should try—or, better yet, cellar!
Unlike some of the high flying price tags of his neighbors, Bruce Neyers’ 40-years of retail experience has always led him to keep his prices low – the $30 price tag is a steal for a Chardonnay of this caliber. But today’s price is just flat out irresistible for Chablis-style Sonoma Chardonnay– for under $25 on bottle one. Stock up.
Vincent’s wines are now the darlings of I don’t know how many Michelin star wine lists (36 at last count). Perhaps more importantly, his wines are universally beloved by the Nicholas Faithful but perhaps none more so than his tiny “Les Trois Chênes” cuvee. Drawn exclusively from the oldest parcel on the estate planted by his grandfather in 1947, these ancient vines have burrowed deep into the limestone rich soil – providing a freshness and startling minerality typically only found in the top wines of Sancerre.

The 2005 Yquem starts out incredibly welcoming with seductive aromas. The mouthfeel offers perfect balance with fresh acidity and elegance complimenting the wine’s power and giving it tremendous grace. It’s crazy good right now, but I think I will defer to Lisa Perotti-Brown, who said in her 97-pt review of this classic wine just last year, “This decadent flavor bomb still needs a good five to seven years in bottle before it is set to go off, but oh what a spectacle it will give then!” From what it’s already showing, this can be one special bottle for Sauternes collectors.
The fantastic 2018 Domaine André Bonhomme Viré-Clessé Vieilles Vignes is crafted by André’s grandson, Aurelien Palthey. It really is one for the ages, taking a brilliant page from that Taillevent script. Glistening pale yellow-green to the rim, infused with mouth-watering aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, tinged with anise and bitter honey. Full-bodied and rich in the mid-palate, yet still wonderfully light on its feet, finishing with textbook Meursaultien cut and vibrancy. Drink now if you’re impatient, or lay down for a decade or two.
