Domaine Hubert Brochard Sancerre Chateau de Thauvenay 2023

93 Points, VinePair – 91 Points, Wine Spectator

The 2023 vintage benefited from a warm, dry summer with perfectly timed September rains, allowing the grapes to reach ideal ripeness.  This ‘Château de Thauvenay’ comes from 30-year-old vines planted on chalky clay-limestone marl from the Kimmeridgian period – the same ancient soils that made Sancerre famous worldwide.

The folks at Hubert Brochard who work this historic Château de Thauvenay site near the Loire Canal don’t cut a single corner. Everything is hand-picked, and then the grapes were pressed in pneumatic presses, then vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, creating what Roger Morris described as “round yet racy, mineral-rich, terroir-transparent Sauvignon Blanc.” This is a beauty that will be thoroughly enjoyed if tasted any time over the next 4-6 years.

Original price was: $42.00.Current price is: $29.99.

93 Points, Roger Morris
This single-vineyard Sancerre from the Hubert Brochard portfolio features lovely green floral aromas with good structure – though more plump than lean – and flavors of green grapes, kiwi and lime with some hints of whey in the finish. A wine of substance without being aggressive.

91 Points, Wine Spectator
“There’s plenty of aromatic charm to this supple, medium-bodied version. Celery seed and fresh-cut chive notes infuse a base of melon and white cherry, with meadow blossom high tones. Offers gentle earthiness on a chalky palate, with white tea tannins and a jolt of acidity cleaning up the finish. Drink now through 2029. Drink now through 2029.”

Founded by Aimée and Hubert Brochard in 1900, this historic domaine has been committed for generations to showcasing the diverse terroirs of Sancerre.

The vineyards surround the winery in Chavignol – widely considered the grand cru village of Sancerre – and grow in the prized “caillotes” soil of small chalky stones. These steep slopes (20-25 degrees) on Chavignol’s three hillsides require meticulous handwork but reward with exceptional minerality and precision.

While the Bollinger name is synonymous with exceptional Champagne, they’ve recently expanded their French wine legacy into Sancerre with their strategic acquisition of Domaine Hubert Brochard in 2022. Now they have special access to vineyard’s like ‘Chateau de Thauvenay’ – a huge advantage over most of their competitors.
