If you aren’t familiar with these guys, Domaine de la Géraudrie is a 5th generation, family-owned Muscadet estate located south of Nantes, in the village/cru of Château-Thébaud. Their renowned cru of Muscadet has long been known for its beautiful granite bedrock that sits underneath a topsoil of sandy loam. It’s an incredibly special place where that bedrock sheet comes as high as 40 cm from the surface.
The terroir is perfectly suited for making Muscadet that is full of tension and bright salty minerality. The Cormerais family, led by Benjamin and his father Bertrand oversee the domaine where their most important job is to bring out this uber-special terroir in their final result. Everything they do here is sustainable and organic in terms of their farming in their quest to harvest healthy and balanced fruit.
One of the flagships of the estate is the old vine Clos de la Géraudrie, which has long been known as a top vineyard in the region, sitting on that famed solid granite that is only 40cm from the surface, giving the wine its distinct crunchy and mouthwatering minerality. Also adding depth and complextion to this wine is the fact that vines here are almost all 55+ years in age. If you’re looking to find the true potential of Muscadet, this is one you’ll probably want to have in the cellar.

The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
Of the 9ha owned by Gerard Boulay, 8 of the hectares are on the slopes of Chavignol on Kimmeridgian or “terre blanche” soils (similar to the soils in Chablis), which he works manually and has farmed organically since 1990. The youngest vines at the domaine were planted by Mr. Boulay in 1972 and the average vine age is approximately 45 years old.
The Mâcon-Verzé from the iconic Domaine Leflaive is always world-class and one crazy good value. Drawn from nine special plots, and utilizing a combination of steel, cement and oak fermentation that leads to a wide array of flavor profiles. The new release is absolutely beaming with energy even in its youth. It boasts floral aromas, lemon-lime citrus notes and a minerality that shines throughout.
The 2022 Hess Shirtail Ranches Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and clean, a vibrant SB that was fermented in 100% stainless steel to preserve its freshness and super-inviting aromatics. It combines fruit from a few of the best counties in California for growing Sauvignon Blanc. Utilizing fruit from the coastal Mendocino site with blocks more inland combines both grass and tropical notes, with ripe fruit but also a little salinity and more natural acidity. It’s a yin/yang combination that really meshes well.
