Seductive oak spices and a plush mouthfeel come with abundant red and black fruits in this full-bodied, appropriately tannic wine that needs time to reach its full potential. Pine and rosemary accents merge nicely with the blackberries and blueberries. Best from 2028–2038.
93 Points, James Suckling
Spiced and creamy character with ripe dark berries and a chocolate and bark undertone. Lots of cassis and floral notes. Medium- to full-bodied, polished and sleek with chalky texture and hints of graphite at the end. Lingering finish.
Clos du Val is a pioneering American winery that has stood up to the very best wines in the world and outclassed them ever since its inception. They were founded back in 1972, a time that wine writer Hugh Johson has referred to as “the turning point in modern wine history”.
The winery was a playground for French-born winemaker Bernard Portet who was tasked with finding any land in Napa Valley that he wanted to make the very best wine in the world. He chose the Stag’s Leap District, and incredibly, only five years later, Clos Du Val made a legendary debut on the international stage with their Cabernet Sauvignon. It ended up as one of only six California Cabernets that was selected for the tasting, and it defeated some of Bordeaux’s biggest names.
They weren’t done – ten years later Clos du Val’s stop amongst the world’s best was forever cemented when they took first place in the Judgement of Paris rematch. They are a true pillar in Stag’s Leap winemaking.
