Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has called Ciro Picariello Fiano “a clear protagonist among the great white wines of Campania.” That’s about as special of a compliment as you can get. This is an incredible wine pulled from the rocky volcanic soils of Campania at nearly 2000 feet elevation. You get such a range from bright lemon acidity, to the complex stony minerality that you get here – you can tell that this is a layered white with a lot going on. Grab a glass and a seat, and take your time with this one!

The stunning 2024 Ciro Picariello Fiano di Avellino has intense aromas of smoke, summer orchard fruit and nutmeg. Linear with a creamy texture and impressive depth, the delicious, elegant palate delivers ripe yellow pear, lemon drop and a dollop of vanilla before closing on a mentholated note. Thanks to grapes selected primarily from the estate’s Summonte vineyard that reaches up to 720m above sea level that imparts great acidity and from the firm’s Montefredane site, this is one of the freshest Fianos out there. A complex bouquet of crushed rock, grapefruit zest, ginger, and white peach The soothingly round palate delivers mineral-infused orchard fruits, a sensation of liquid stone, and a jolt of vibrant acidity. The finish tapers off with dramatic length, nearly salty with vivid notes of nectarine. This thrill ride of a Fiano will have a lot of fans.

The quote above is not to be taken lightly, because Joe is probably right. I mean this is totally, totally knock-out Fiano that’s on a different level than most of its peers. Ciro Picariello is a special producer in Southern Italy that is raising the bar for the entire region.
