Chateau Poujeaux Moulis-en-Medoc 2020

94+ Points, The Wine Independent, 94 Points, Wine Enthusiast – 93 Points, James Suckling – 92 Points, Vinous

The 2020 release is utterly spectacular. The Wine Independent describes “an ocean of fine, precise fruit that’s crunchy and spicy with red berries, blackcurrants, coffee, and sweet strawberries – still young and pure with a promising future.” Wine Enthusiast found it “ripe and juicy, bright with black currant and rich with generous tannins.”

This is serious Left Bank Bordeaux from an excellent vintage. The Wine Independent called them “the quiet kid at the back of the Bordeaux classroom that can easily compete against the Grand Cru Classes.” It’s the perfect description. There’s plenty of muscle here, but also tons of balance and elegance. It’s the kind of wine that builds with age and/or time in the glass and earns respect not through pedigree, but through the sheer quality of what’s in the glass.

Original price was: $45.00.Current price is: $35.00.

94+ Points, The Wine Independent
The nose of 2020 Poujeaux is just wonderful. You can feel the ocean of fine, precise, and structured fruit elevating this chateau to new heights. The taste is crunchy and spicy with notes red berries, blackcurrants, coffee and sweet strawberries. This is a great glass of wine, still so young and pure with a very promising future. It is a fine example of a young Poujeaux and a testament to the level of winemaking this chateau has reached.

94 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Owned by a member of the Cuvelier family, this estate has produced a ripe, juicy wine bright with black currant and rich with generous tannins. The future is good for this carefully structured wine.

93 Points, James Suckling
This has a dusty character with black cherries and currants, as well as hints of cocoa, wet earth and raw mushrooms. Medium- to full-bodied with ripe, plush tannins that continue to build up throughout the deep, dark-fruited palate. It’s a muscular Poujeaux with a spicy and chocolatey finish.

92 Points, Neil Martin – Vinous
The 2020 Poujeaux is a wonderful Moulis-en-Médoc and likely to offer superb value-for-money. Bright blackberry commingles with blueberry and graphite on the nose, quite intense and determined to make an impression. The palate is structured but well balanced, the silver thread of acidity running from start to finish. A little glossy in style towards the finish, that will be tempered by bottle-age which Poujeaux always needs. Don’t ignore this.

Château Poujeaux doesn’t have a Grand Cru Classé badge. It’s not in Pauillac or Margaux. It doesn’t charge $150 a bottle or get written about in every Bordeaux retrospective.
But here’s what it does have: 94+ points from Wine Independent, 94 from Wine Enthusiast, 93 from James Suckling, and 92 from Vinous for the 2020 vintage. A mountain of praise and a price tag for a wine under $40/bottle. That makes absolutely no sense for this level of Left Bank Bordeaux, but you know I’m not complaining!

Poujeaux sits in Moulis-en-Médoc, one of the smaller appellations on the Left Bank that doesn’t get the fanfare of its famous neighbors. But the Cuvelier family – yes, the same family behind Grand Cru Classé Clos Fourtet in Saint-Émilion – purchased the estate in 2008 and have been quietly turning out some of the finest wines in the château’s history under winemaker Christophe Labenne.
