Chateau Pegau Cuvee Maclura Cotes-du-Rhone 2023

93 Points, James Suckling

I recently tasted her Cuvée Maclura Côtes du Rhône and was totally blown away. This is most certainly not your average CDR. Laurence applies the same rigorous, low-yield, old-school techniques to this wine that made Pegau famous in the first place. Whole-cluster fermentations, traditional handling, with a dense character that echoes the family’s legendary pedigree. People in the know call this “Baby Châteauneuf-du-Pape”, and once you taste it you completely understand why. This is a crazy sophisticated wine for the price.

Original price was: $26.00.Current price is: $22.00.

Pegau is one of the oldest wineries in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, established in 1670. It’s run by Laurence Féraud, who came back to the family estate in 1987 and turned it into an international legend. While everyone else went high-tech, Laurence stuck to the old ways: whole-cluster fermentation, ancient oak barrels that have been in the family for generations, native yeasts, no filtration. Laurence is a superstar. Her Cuvée Réservée was the first CDP ever to receive a perfect 100-point review and she consistently outpaces most of her neighbors.
