Chateau Moulin de Canhaut Medoc 2016

The 2016 vintage was a stunner in Bordeaux – Wine Spectator gave it 97 points and called the Upper Médoc “superb.” A rainy spring followed by a bone-dry summer that let Cabernet ripen slowly and completely. These are wines with structure, freshness, and aromatics that most vintages can’t touch.

Somehow, some way I was led to this wine, and I am thrilled to be able to bring it to you. This is a 2016 Bordeaux drinking in its prime. It’s a fruit-forward expression yet not at all in your face – completely dialed and elegance with silky smooth tannins that nearly melt on your tongue. This is one to enjoy today, tomorrow and later this week. It’s a dream right now, especially at this great price.

90 Points, James Suckling
This offers a wealth of ripe summer berries and a gently spicy edge with toasty oak influence. The palate has a quite fresh and crunchy edge and a tangy finish. A blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.

Château Moulin de Canhaut is a highly regarded winery along Bordeaux’s Left Bank that is part of a larger operation by managed by Château Poitevin. For the last decade plus, they have been a go-to source for some of the very best values in the region, earning the designation of Cru Bourgeois, which signifies a consistent level of quality for non-classified estates in the Médoc.

The key to their success is in part due to their high usage of Merlot for their Bordeaux Blends, closer to 50/50 most vintages, which is somewhat less prevalent along the Left Bank. I was lucky to taste this 2016 bottling at a lunch, and immediately identified it as something that I had to bring to the Nicholas Wines faithful.
