This one comes from Patrick Todesco, a rising star and third-generation winemaker who has been making award-winning wines at his estate in Entre Deux Mers. Located on the far east side of Bordeaux, the climate here is perfect for growing great Sauvignon Blanc, since it’s slightly warmer yet drier than other neighboring villages.
Patrick utilizes the rows at the highest elevations for his Sauvignon Blanc, rows that tower over the rest of the region. Picking from these higher elevations gives the wine its brightness and natural acidity and helps keep the grapes from overripening. Then he utilizes skin-contact maceration for 48 hours to bring out maximum expression with the full array of aromas.
After tasting this one at Barrel & Roost last week, I can assure you this delivers all that and more–a wine that drinks at least two times its modest price tag. It’s a dead ringer for Sancerre and it’s not even a Loire Valley wine, which is how you know there’s something really special with this one.
