I tasted the 2020 a few weeks back and I can tell you it is drinking absolutely incredibly right now. With just a little time in the glass, this is a monster that comes to life. Decanter gave it 95 points calling it “a sleeping giant -finessed and focused, clearly powerful, all elements kept tight and controlled. Sleek and stylish.” Parker’s Wine Advocate came in slightly lower at 94 points describing “ripe rounded tannins and generous black fruits finishing long and earthy.” Make no mistake, this is a big, structured Saint-Émilion with the elegance and precision that only Pierre Seillan can deliver.

Wide, powdery, fine but firm tannins; a lovely density to this. Concentrated and intense, very straight and streamlined. Finessed and focused. Clearly powerful, the energy is apparent, but all the elements are kept quite tight and controlled, so you’re not getting so much expansion or nuance necessarily. Still, well worked with clarity to the fruit and tannins. Wet stone, liquorice, toasted caramel all giving elements of wood but integrated and supportive. Feels like a sleeping giant, will be good in time, sleek and stylish.

Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Lassegue needs a little swirling to begin, to unlock bright, cheery scents of fresh blackberries, black raspberries and redcurrants, plus hints of black cherry preserves, charcoal, woodsmoke and underbrush with a waft of tapenade. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm structure of ripe, rounded tannins and just enough freshness to support the generous black fruits, finishing long and earthy.
I became a Pierre Seillan fan the moment I tasted his first 100-point Vérité wine from Sonoma. Here was a man whose expertise and roots were firmly in the old world, the Loire, Bordeaux, Tuscany – yet it was crystal clear that his talents transcended borders entirely. This was a winemaker who could undoubtedly create perfection no matter where his feet were planted.
Pierre has spent the past five decades perfecting what he calls his micro-cru philosophy – studying each individual vineyard site, understanding its nuances, and crafting wines that are a pure expression of their origin. The man is a genius who has been treated to 17 perfect scores at Vérité alone. He crafts Anakota in Sonoma, Arcanum in Tuscany, and in 2003 when the Jackson family purchased the 17th-century Saint-Émilion estate Château Lassègue, Pierre got to go back to Bordeaux, where he first made such a name for himself. Ever since then, these Saint-Emilion Grand Crus have become must-have for serious collectors.
