Chateau Larmande Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2010

95 Points, James Suckling – 92 Points, Wine Spectator

Here’s where a great offer becomes down right ridiculous. Today’s wine, the 2010 Chateau Larmande Saint-Emilion Grand Cru isn’t just a delicious 2010 Bordeaux at a great price direct from the winery’s cellar on the Right Bank. It also comes with a rave 95-point review from James Suckling who called it “long and classy” and highlighted “huge structure and multilayered texture” as well as a “wonderful freshness.” He also said it needed a couple of years to soften the tannins. But was a long time ago. More than a decade later, this wine has had all the time it needed, and in a magical year like 2010, it’s rewarding patience in a major way. Suckling closed his review wby declaring this the “Best wine for a long time.” I’m not going to argue!

Original price was: $55.00.Current price is: $44.00.

Attractive nose with animal notes, mint and dark fruit. Wonderful freshness at the beginning of the palate and builds up with a huge structure and multilayered texture. Long and very classy. Great potential but needs a couple of years to soften up the tannins. Best wine for a long time.

92 Points, Wine Spectator
Dense and slightly chewy in style, with a strong briary edge to the warm currant confiture and steeped black cherry fruit. A strong roasted alder note on the finish keeps the grippy feel going. This may ultimately lack finesse in the end, even after cellaring, but has some guts and character for sure.

Château Larmande has been at this for a long time. The estate is recorded in the Saint-Émilion archives going back to 1585, and a stone in the cellar still bears the year 1640. Local lore says the Jurats, the town’s historic magistrates, held official sessions on the property. The vineyard is one continuous 20-hectare plot about a mile from the village, with clay-limestone, siliceous clay and ancient sands in the soil. It also has Cabernet Franc vines that are more than 100 years old, which is where a lot of the depth in this wine comes from.
