Chateau Kirwan Margaux 2020

94 Pts, Jeb Dunnuck – 94 Pts, Decanter – 94 Pts, James Suckling – 94 Pts, The Wine Independent

Chateau Kirwan has been on a tear recently, and their Margaux for the last few vintages has put to shame most under-$100 Napa Cabs and offers more ageability. This is a no doubt, home-run Bordeaux value. But what’s even better is that the 2020 vintage in Bordeaux, unlike Napa, is already showing so beautifully. Decanter summed it up in their 94-point review by deeming it “Just so juicy and alive, refreshing, vibrant and concentrated.”

It is very expressive with sweet black fruits, a little bit of sweet oak and even some citrus zest. It’s powerful, but elegant and not overpowering, showing all kinds of potential. Jeb Dunnuck argues that it has another 20-25 years ahead. I don’t doubt it. This has the bones to last a while in the cellar. I’m not sure if it will reach the heights of the 2009 vintage, but Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate recently declared, “In terms of aromatic purity and managed extraction, this is the finest Kirwan for some time.”

Original price was: $75.00.Current price is: $65.00.

94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Lots of smoky oak, ripe blackcurrants, blueberries, tobacco, and chocolaty notes emerge from the 2020 Château Kirwan, a richly textured, medium to full-bodied Margaux. A wine that blossoms with time in the glass, it’s a plush, sexy, yet brilliantly balanced 2020 offering velvety tannins and a great finish, and while the oak is preset right on opening, it integrated beautifully with air.

94 Points, James Suckling
Attractive nose of hazelnuts, chocolate, blueberries, blackcurrants, peach pits and sandalwood. Hints of olives and mushrooms, too. Complex, layered and integrated, with a medium to full body and powdery tannins. Long and savory at the end. Drink from 2025.

94 Points, Decanter
Gorgeous nose, full of dark bramble fruits and dark chocolate and flowers. Round and energetic with a core of intensely concentrated blackcurrants, plums and black cherries. Lovely refinement here, sleek, satisfying, clean, precise. Great drive from start to finish, this has both a satisfying wight and texture – plump but not too much, mineral and salty but not too much. Glamour and confidence. A lovely wine, still youthful but expertly delivered. Just so juicy and alive, refreshing, vibrant and concentrated. Really very stylish.

94 Points, Lisa Perotti-Brown
The Kirwan 2020 is deep garnet-purple in color. It has compelling scents of baked plums, warm cassis, and baking spices, with hints of rosehip tea and pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers a good core of black fruits, with a grainy texture and plenty of freshness, finishing with a minerally lift.

Just six minutes down the road past Chateau Palmer, perched upon the Cantenac plateau, is Margaux Grand Cru, third growth, Chateau Kirwan.

Those of you who locked into the 2019 vintage can probably attest, this winery has been scorching hot lately. They’ve been on a tear for the last 15 years, and the 2020 vintage for me already exceeds its predecessor. I’m not sure it’s going to quite be 2009 good, but what is? What I do know is that this received more 94-point scores than any vintage before at Kirwan. That seems pretty fitting based on what I tasted earlier this past week.

For my money, this puts to shame most under-$100 Napa Cabs and offers even more ageability. But what’s even better is that it’s already showing so beautifully. Decanter summed it up in their 94-point review by deeming it “Just so juicy and alive, refreshing, vibrant and concentrated. Really very stylish.” You can’t argue with a word of that. It’s a powerful wine that shows all kinds of potential but is already so approachable now, that the wait will not be easy. Just make sure you stash it somewhere safe!
