Chateau Fontenil Fronsac 2016

93 Points, Wine Spectator – 93 Points, James Suckling – 92 Points, Vinous

Michel Rolland is one of the greatest winemakers of all time, having worked with nearly 200 estates, including icons like Château Pavie, Angélus, Ornellaia, and Harlan Estate. Chateau Fontenil is his baby, his home estate, which is known for showcasing the very best of Fronsac each vintage.

Every vintage, it represents one of the best values, but in 2016, it’s a ‘can’t-miss’ bottle that embarrasses wines at 3-5x the price. The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux was superb—undoubtedly the most accomplished vintage since 2009 and 2010, with near-perfect weather and beautiful grapes from north to south. This wine has had nearly a decade to develop, and it’s drinking beautifully right now.

Suckling gave it 93 points and called it “already gorgeous” with “full-bodied, yet soft and velvety.” Wine Spectator matched with 93 points of their own for a wine they dubbed: “Sleek in feel, with racy acidity.”

Original price was: $45.00.Current price is: $35.00.

93 Points, Wine Spectator
Sleek in feel, with racy acidity pulling the raspberry and plum fruit along from the get-go. The chalky minerality is well-embedded on the finish. Solid.

93 Points, James Suckling
Extremely perfumed and bright with raspberry, currant and dried-flower character. It’s full-bodied, yet soft and velvety with a flavorful finish. Already gorgeous. Better from 2022 on.

92 Points, Vinous
“The 2016 Fontenil is ripe, racy and voluptuous. Floral and blood orange notes add lift and energy to the red berry and raspberry jam fruit. Vibrant and wonderfully inviting, the 2016 has so much to offer. Silky tannins add to the wine’s sheer appeal.”

Michel Rolland is arguably the most famous and polarizing figure in the history of modern winemaking. Based in Pomerol but working across every major wine-producing continent, he pioneered the concept of the “Flying Winemaker.” With a client list that has exceeded 150 estates globally—including icons like Château Pavie, Angélus, Ornellaia, and Harlan Estate—his “touch” has shaped the taste of premium wine for over four decades.

Michel Rolland and his wife Dany were already consulting for some of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates when they bought this 11-hectare property in Fronsac in 1986. This was his ultimate gamble: taking everything he learned working with the best and applying it to his own dirt. And it worked beautifully. Fontenil became one of the leading estates that put Fronsac on the map, doing wonders for the entire appellation’s reputation.
