Chateau Angelus Tempo d’Angelus Bordeaux 2023

91 Points, James Suckling

James Suckling called 2023 “really classic Bordeaux” after tasting his 41st consecutive vintage from barrel. He compared it to legendary years like 2019, 2016, 2001, 1996, and 1995—vintages with ripe, balanced fruit, firm tannins, and lower alcohol. Wine Advocate raved, calling it “very impressive for this price point.”

I tasted through this wine myself, and it’s a sleeping giant—the kind that slowly awakens in the glass after 20-25 minutes and displays layers of red and black fruit nuance that most producers simply cannot recreate or match. It flashes the level of depth and complexity you’d expect from anything bearing the Angélus name.

Original price was: $40.00.Current price is: $32.95.

91 Points, James Suckling
Racy fruit with hawthorn, rose hips, red berries and cherries. Linear, with a nice structure, but nothing heavy from the fruit flesh in the middle. Fine-grained, with medium body and a chewy but juicy finish. Needs two more years to allow the fruit tannins to round off. More bones than flesh this year. Drink after 2026.

Château Angélus commands immediate attention in Saint-Émilion due to its unique position on the Pied de Côte—the desirable clay-limestone slopes that transition to the flat, sandy plain. The name itself is inspired by the three bells that chime the Angelus prayer, which can be heard from the estate’s famous triangular plot of vines.

This super unique terroir, where Merlot in particular thrives in rich clay and the Cabernet Franc finds mineral precision in the limestone, allows Angélus to create wines of immense power and structural intensity. Following its controversial but ultimately triumphant promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status in 2012, Angélus solidified its position in the ‘Big 3’ with Ausone and Cheval Blanc – true icons of the Right Bank.
