Chasing Rain Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain 2020

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast – 91 Points, James Suckling – 90 Points, The Wine Advocate

Chasing Rain is the embodiment of ‘nothing is impossible’. Despite Red Mountain’s extreme climate, with a mere 6-8 inches of annual rainfall, Melka and his team have crafted an exceptional Cabernet. It’s a full-bodied, complex wine with aromas of black cherry, plum, and leather, and lush flavors of blackberry, cassis, and vanilla.

This wine has garnered critical acclaim, earning 90 points from Parker’s Wine Advocate and 91 points from both Wine Enthusiast, and James Suckling. Incredibly though, despite all the big scores, it remains remarkably affordable.

Original price was: $25.00.Current price is: $22.00.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Dark raspberries, lavender, dry straw and cedar frolic on the nose, while black cherry, earthy oregano and brown sugar flavors do the heavy lifting. This is a medium-bodied affair where the wine’s soft acidity and creamy texture makes a second glass easy to pour.

91 Points, James Suckling
Aromas of dark fruit and berries, pine and fresh mint. Full bodied with generous density on the fore palate, leading to a pleasing mid palate. Long finish.

90 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
Fresh, vibrant and juicy with elegant oak tones that waft from the glass, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain is instantly impressive. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is mineral-driven with succulent oak and brown baking spices that offer rich and expressive flavors of plum compote and spiced cherries. The wine continues to unfold and unpack over the delightfully lingering finish. This drinks incredibly well for the price. This delightful wine was aged 20 months in 22% American oak barrels, and it’s nicely approachable and punches well above its weight class. Give it a try!

Philippe Melka is renowned as one of the greatest winemaking consultants in the world, and rightfully so. His wines are typically associated with big, premium price tags. However, this particular Melka Cabernet is the one rare exception.

Given the wine’s quality, complexity, and ageability, I initially estimated a price tag around $75 per bottle. When I learned the actual price, I was actually left speechless. This Melka Cabernet is available for under $20 per bottle on case orders. Given how much Melka costs as a consultant, I thought this was literally mathematically impossible.

This is an incredible opportunity to experience a wine that, as Parker’s Wine Advocate notes, “drinks incredibly well for the price” and “punches well above its weight class.”
