Castello di Volpaia Prelius Prile 2015

Year in and year out, Chianti’s top-scoring winery always seems to be Castello di Volpaia. Their Chianti Classico was famously Wine Spectator’s highest rated Chianti Classico in the history of the publication just a few vintages ago — and just about every red wine that the winery puts out is outstanding.

In fact, the only problem I have with one of Tuscany’s top estates is that they never seem to have enough wine for us to offer anymore! Not the CC Riserva, the regular Chianti or even the Prelius Cab. I’ve been communicating with our friends in Italy and pleading our case, but it’s been hard for them to get together 20 cases of any one product ever since they really blew up on the international stage.

But after enough petitioning and constant communication, not only did we finally manage a good allocation of something – but we were given something special at an incredible price. They didn’t just open up the doors, they opened up the library and gave us something completely new from the incredible 2015 vintage.

Original price was: $40.00.Current price is: $24.99.

92 Points, Vinous
With its full, oaky nose and essence-like, sweet fruit, this warm and generous red has plenty of healthy tannins but finishes slightly sweet. With slightly less ripeness this would rate even higher. Drink now.

91 Points, James Suckling
A blend of organically grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Merlot, this offers dark berry, toasted oak and mocha aromas. The dense palate delivers blackberry jam, espresso and clove alongside firm tannins. Drink through 2024.

92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, James Suckling

We’ve never had the Prelius ‘Prile’ before but it’s the most expensive wine we’ve offered from Castello di Volpaia to date by release price. This is an absolutely gorgeous Super Tuscan that sizzles even more now that it has a little bit of age to it. It hits with intense aromas of sweet spices, black fruit and red licorice. Then comes the waves of juicy black cherry and blackberry fruit with some mouthwatering chewy tannins and a medium to full body.
