Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019

96 Points, James Suckling – 95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck

“Made since 1980, Caparzo’s Riserva is selected at harvest by consulting oenologist team, Paolo and Jacopo Vagaggini. It ages primarily in large Slavonian oak casks with a short passage in French oak tonneaux of 750 litres. Still youthfully restrained, the nose flirts with cedar, leather and heather, then the palate changes gear with its overtly powerful drive of substantial yet sophisticated chalky tannins and brisk acidity. By comparison, subtle flavours of wet stone and polished red cherry seem polite and tame for the time being. This will need time to develop into its full expression.”

94 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The nose brings both fruit and warmth, as aromas of strawberries, cherries and hibiscus flirt with notes of dark chocolate, orange peel and stones basking in the sun. On the palate, a wave of cranberries brings astringency that freshens a persistent streak of stoniness, before the chocolate returns for the finish. The firm, imposing tannins creep up slowly, maintaining depth without weight.

94 Points, James Suckling
Lots of rich fruit here with baked blueberries, sliced oranges, spiced cherries, some toffee and lemon verbena. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins. Creamy and opulently spiced yet well-integrated and feels weightless. Delicious finish.

92 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Proprietor Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini’s signature is featured on the front label of the Caparzo 2018 Brunello di Montalcino. This wine is steady and firm with black fruit, spice, cured tobacco and grilled herb. You get nice concentration and plush tannins in this wine. In a nod to the winemaking team, it also shows a more relatable 13.5% alcohol content.

Ever since the picturesque winery was acquired in 1998 by Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini everything started skyrocketing for the small Tuscan winery. Along with their sibling winery, Altesino (which Angelini purchased a few years later) the wineries consistently light up the scoreboard to the tune of 94 points or higher. Amazingly, this is actually Caparzo’s fifth time now in the last six vintages where their green label bottling of Brunello di Montalcino has accomplished that feat. That simply does not happen anywhere else.

Nearly every vintage the Caparzo drinks better than almost any other Brunello I taste in a line-up next to it (and I often taste a dozen or so at a time). In an outrageously good 2019 vintage that has become known to be one of the best in the past 25 years, Caparzo benefits greatly from having high altitude vineyards in their own little rolling hill oasis. This is always one of the very best wineries in Tuscany.
