94-96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“One of the most opulent, sexy wines in the vintage, the 2022 Chateau Capbern just about jumps out of the glass with its sweet red, blue and black fruits as well as notions of chocolate, graphite and leafy herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated, and textured on the palate, with ripe tannins, this stunning Saint-Estephe is up there with the finest vintages that I’ve tasted from this chateau.”

Fine dark spices with plenty of cassis and peppercorns. Spiced black cherries too. Rich on the palate with fine, dusty tannins that manage to vibrate and deliver structure to the fruit. Almost full-bodied, this has outstanding depth, concentrated and length. Drink from 2027.
Château Capbern’s history in Saint-Estèphe dates back to the 18th century, originating from marriages between the Rivière, Capbern, and Gasqueton families. Notably, in 1894, the Capbern-Gasquetons acquired the prestigious Château Calon Ségur. These two renowned estates remained under the same family ownership for generations until 2011, when Denise Gasqueton, the last of the family line, passed away. Subsequently, Suravenir purchased both properties, ushering in a new era while respecting their rich heritage.
Capbern’s terroir is exceptional, characterized by well-exposed, gently sloping, sandy-gravelly soils mixed with clay and chalk. These conditions promote optimal grape maturation and excellent drainage.
Sharing management with its sister estate, Calon Ségur, Capbern boasts a gravity-fed vat house with 37 vats and an aging cellar where wines mature for 18 months. Their equipment and winemaking quality are second to none.
