Bodegas Eguiluz is a tiny, family-run estate in the heart of Rioja Alavesa that’s causing major ripples throughout Spain, and it’s already starting to spill out from there. Led by the father-son duo of AgustÃn and also AgustÃn, they represent the “Vigneron” movement, a welcomed shift towards estate-grown fruit and minimal-intervention winemaking that is threatening to upend the traditional Rioja hierarchy.
They’ve already caught the attention of top critics and sommeliers by producing wines that prioritize vibrant fruit and terroir over the heavy vanilla and oak notes associated with extended American oak aging. They’re proving that Rioja can make wines with freshness and depth and that there are plenty of consumers who prefer this style over the heavily oaked Riojas.
