Bodegas Eguiluz Rioja 2024

The father/son team here moved away from the traditional Rioja model of buying grapes from various sources. Instead, they focus exclusively on their own family-held parcels, many of which are composed of ancient, bush-trained vines. For them, fruit that’s “fine” simply isn’t good enough. This is 100% estate fruit, a true family labor of love.

Their 2024 entry-level Rioja is an explosion of primary fruit: we’re talking blackberries, violets, blackberries, and red licorice with silky, smooth tannins and an effortless texture.
In a region where historically “bigger is better,” Bodegas Eguiluz is a reminder that the most exciting wines often come from the smallest cellars from winemakers who like to get the heck out of the way as much as possible and let the fruit speak for itself.

Bodegas Eguiluz is a tiny, family-run estate in the heart of Rioja Alavesa that’s causing major ripples throughout Spain, and it’s already starting to spill out from there. Led by the father-son duo of Agustín and also Agustín, they represent the “Vigneron” movement, a welcomed shift towards estate-grown fruit and minimal-intervention winemaking that is threatening to upend the traditional Rioja hierarchy.

They’ve already caught the attention of top critics and sommeliers by producing wines that prioritize vibrant fruit and terroir over the heavy vanilla and oak notes associated with extended American oak aging. They’re proving that Rioja can make wines with freshness and depth and that there are plenty of consumers who prefer this style over the heavily oaked Riojas.
