Bodegas Beronia Rioja Riserva 2020

93 Points, Wine Enthusiast – 90 Points, Wine Spectator

These guys are nuts in their approach. The winemaking team constantly tinkers with how wines interact with different toast levels and wood types, leading to their patented and innovative approach to mixed barrels, constructed with American oak staves and French oak tops to impart a distinctive character to their wines.

The 2020 Reserva showcases the best of that approach. Wine Enthusiast came in at 93 points, describing “aromas of black cherry, purple fig and caramel popcorn.” The beauty of Rioja is that it’s a bit of a chameleon region that can taste a little like this or a little like that, but also has its own unique flavors that readers should seek out.

Original price was: $26.00.Current price is: $19.99.

93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Aromas of black cherry, purple fig and caramel popcorn prepare the taste buds for flavors of blackberry, pomegranate, cocoa butter and lavender with a hint of salinity. An underlying light floral note lingers on the palate.

90 Points, Wine Spectator
A harmonious version, with a deep underpinning of smoke and warm spices buoying concentrated flavors of cassis and baked cherry fruit, tea rose, thyme and licorice. The sculpted tannins are finely integrated, providing a limber yet structured feel to the lingering, spiced finish. Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano. Drink now through 2030.

Beronia is a big-time Rioja producer with deep historical roots. Located in Ollauri, at the heart of Rioja Alta (the highest elevation of the three Rioja subregions), their magic ingredient is that their vineyards benefit from the unique influence of both Atlantic and Mediterranean climates as well as the area’s distinctive chalky clay soils.

Take that geographic anomaly and pair it with Beronia’s pioneering work with oak and you’re absolutely off to the races.
