Bezel Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2023

92 Points, The Tasting Panel – 91 Points, James Suckling – 90 Points, Vinous

Paso Robles sees a longer growing season than Napa with hot, sunny days and cool, clear nights that allow fruit to develop extraordinary complexity and depth. They choose to source fruit from two vineyards at opposite ends of the AVA, each with dramatically different personalities to get the most well-rounded blend. Big, juicy fruit but with tannic structure behind it and plenty of acidity. That makes this a layered, complex and genuinely impressive Cabernet Sauvignon at a price that Napa simply can’t compete with.

Three major critics all weighed in positively. Tasting Panel gave it 92 points, writing that “the Cakebread touch is evident in the wine’s seamless balance and sophisticated finish.” James Suckling came in at 91 points, calling it “juicy and fruit-forward with loads of California charisma.” And Vinous checked in at 90, describing “violet-laced blackberries, soothingly round textures and crunchy tannins offset by juicy acidity.”

Original price was: $45.00.Current price is: $30.00.

Since 1972, the name ‘Cakebread’ has been synonymous with Napa Valley excellence. What started as Jack Cakebread’s dream (with help from Robert Mondavi and a world-class winery designed by William Turnbull) has become one of America’s most coveted brands. In my twenty-plus years in the business, they’ve amazingly never left the ‘Top 10 Most Popular Restaurant Brands’ list – and for good reason.

In 2021, the Cakebread family had the foresight to expand into Paso Robles. Smart move. It’s not like this isn’t a family that knows exactly what great fruit looks like and what to do with it. Now they’ve taken that half-century of winemaking wisdom and applied it to one of California’s hottest appellations. The result is Bezel, and their 2023 bottling is their finest vintage to date in this winery’s young history.
