Owner/winemaker, Joe Wagner chose the name Belle Glos to honor his grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner. Lorna was a co-founder of Caymus Vineyards along with her son Chuck and was an inspirational figure to Joe and an avid lover of Pinot Noir.
Though she wasn’t around to see her grandson’s Pinot Noir project, there’s little doubt she would’ve loved the timeless terroir-driven classics that Joe and team cook up each vintage. Last year’s iteration of the “Clark & Telephone” was a huge success with an immediate sellout thanks in part to the rave 94pt review it got from the Wine Enthusiast. But thanks to our great standing with the family behind Caymus, we’re able to secure this rare Santa Maria Valley small lot bottling before the big scores roll in once again.
Ruby to the rim the Clark & Telephone opens with inviting aromas of crushed cherries, cranberry and raspberry jam, cedar and cinnamon. It’s bold and full-bodied, especially for a Pinot Noir with juicy notes of cherry pie, blueberries and blackberry and a silky texture with deep, rich undertones that leave a wonderful aftertaste after a nice long finish.

Once again dialing up fruit from 1000-1500ft in elevation in the Dundee Hills, Chad’s 2021 is juicy, laser focused and roaring out of the gates. Chad tells me that similar wines (very similar wines) off this vineyard are raising their prices up to $55/bottle from $45 this year due to 2020’s lost year. But where most people are raising prices to recoup last year’s losses, the CHAD Pinot Noir price is somehow lower. A true gift from our favorite winemaker.

San Giorgio Ugolforte is the sister winery of Poggio di Sotto. Their 2017 presents a dark core of red and black berry fruit layered with earth, leather, smoke, and herbs. It’s a complex and elegant expression, that presents a full mouthfeel that is firm in tannin structure. The refreshing acidity frames a graceful finish. Just a classic Brunello di Montalcino.

“This is an exceptional vintage of this exceptional wine, its foundation built around 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, with dustings of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Beautiful in berry fruit, textured and refined tannin and hints of lavender, licorice and sage, it has complexity and energy in equal measure, lengthy and beautifully focused, a truly impressive achievement of site, vintage and winemaker.” -Wine Enthusiast
Winemaker Marjorie Gallet’s Effet Papillon Rouge is a terrific blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignane, harvested from the iron rich soil just outside of Rivesaltes at the base of Pyrenees. This one is a vibrant wine, with aromas of wild black raspberries and sweet spices. The mid palate is rich and velvety, with a core of sweet black fruit that finishes fresh, long and silky. At the price, it’s one of the easier no-brainer case buys we offer.
