The Belle Glos wines, an ode to Joseph Wagner’s grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos – a larger than life personality, showcase the bigger, bolder style of Pinot Noir. Like today’s selection from Arroyo Seco, they come from California’s top Pinot wine-growing regions, often along the coastline.
Up until now, we’ve got to work with all three of the single-vineyard Pinot Noirs in the Belle Glos portfolio, the Dairyman Vineyard, Las Alturas Vineyard and the Clark and Telephone. But today, for a few special folks, we’ve again unlocked the bonus 4th Belle Glos wine- the Balade (Wanderer) which allows the Wagners to quite literally, wander, and find the best spots in Sta. Rita Hills to make their cuvee. With their relationships and reputations, this is a winning formula to say the least.
The Balade is usually a restaurant-only selection making it the hardest one of the bunch to get your hands on. It’s a big, concentrated effort with a lovely mix of black cherry, blueberries, raspberries and baking spice. It’s ripe and full-bodied on the mouthfeel with wild berries, sage and a hint of minerality. The best part is the bones on this– great balance and structure and a seamless blend, that showcases the best of some of Arroyo Seco’s big ticket vineyards.

This lush, luxurious Pinot Noir begins with hearty aromas of baked black cherry, clove, nutmeg and smoke on the nose. There is undeniable power on the palate yet also some finesse, presenting flavors of black cherry laced with mace as layered tannins and acidity carry through the finish.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.

2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.

This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.

For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
