94 Points, Decanter
The first, wider release on the Place de Bordeaux for this wine outside of DBR Lafite. Beautiful beguiling fragrance on the nose, smells floral with dried roses and herbs, fragrant, sun-kissed blackberries and cherries and a touch of smoke. Clean and focused, with beautifully delineated tannins and a sense of seriousness to the frame. Crisp, straight and well-defined with mouthwatering, juicy acidity balancing the tangy, spiced fruit and layers of minerality. Rich, and heady, confident but so harmonious on the palate with a long, clean crystalline finish. Refined and forward finishing with a black olive and sweet spiced plum aspect. First year of organic conversion. It’s a blend of 52% Syrah, 19% Mourvedre, 20% Carignan and 9% Grenache.

93 Points, Jane Anson
Plenty of graceful black and red fruits, this is an impressively balanced wine from a warm vintage. Turmeric and smoked cumin kick things off, emphasizing tight tannins that soften over the next few years, before everything opens through the mid palate to show a burst of baked raspberry, incense and rosemary spices, orange peel, and plenty of juice. First time for Domaine d’Aussieres on the Place.

Blackcurrants, slate, crushed stone and berries with hints of chocolate. Medium-bodied, bright and racy. Vivid at the end. A blend of syrah, carignan, mourvedre and grenache. Drink now.

Chateau Aussiers is located in Narbonne in the south of France. Its history dates back to ‘the first daughter of Rome’ and 118 BC when the Romans brought vines over and began planting them throughout the region.

The estate was built atop a crazy fertile ecosystem where nature absolutely thrives. The vineyards are tucked away in the rugged hills just behind the Mediterranean coastline. Here the soil is a mix of sandstone with very little clay and even less water. This is perfect for the big Reds of southern France. The yields are very low, but the concentration and power from the vines are unlike anywhere else in France.

But here’s where it gets even better.

This place was already a viticulture marvel to begin with. Then it was acquired by arguably the greatest wine portfolio in the world, by Baron Eric de Rothschild and company of Chateau Lafite Rohtschild fame. Their obsession with organic farming and biodynamics has only helped make this place an even more well-oiled machine and one that’s churning out their best wines ever.

Unsurprisingly, all the changes have led to big increase of interest in their wine – culminating in this vintage, the outstanding 2019 vintage, being their first that was released on the Place de Bordeaux, amongst their big brother Lafite, and a host of other wines representing the very best expressions in the world. The timing was perfect.
