Backed by a very rich and very environmentally conscious investor, Avignonesi has been transformed from a centuries-old classic Tuscan winery into a re-invented, industry-leading, sustainable and biodynamic winery with organic wines and very minimal intervention taking place in an immaculate, state-of-the-art winemaking facility.
All in all, it’s one of the more impressive Italian estates. About 450 acres of vineyards fully certified organic and biodynamic. All wines are vegan and are made exclusively with grapes cultivated on the estate. A chef runs their own culinary program on-site, food and wine pairings, wine classes, the whole works. I mean they’re really dialed in. Melissa, if you’re reading this: I found our next move when the kids graduate.
Their SuperTuscan, Grifi (Griffin), is a particular highlight in an impressive portfolio. It’s a large reason, Antonio Galloni called Avignonesi, “one of the most respected names in Tuscany”. The ½ Cabernet, ½ Sangiovese blend is a big boy, especially in the hot 2018 vintage, but it also is very tightly structured with silky Sangiovese tannins and a great acidic backbone from the Cabernet that give it lift and elegance as well as ageability.

Sweet-berry aromas with white flowers and sandalwood. Medium to full body with fine, silky-textured tannins and a long, caressing finish. Real and curated. 50.3% Sangiovese and 49.7% Cabernet Sauvignon. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in the 2018 vintage. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.

San Giorgio Ugolforte is the sister winery of Poggio di Sotto. Their 2017 presents a dark core of red and black berry fruit layered with earth, leather, smoke, and herbs. It’s a complex and elegant expression, that presents a full mouthfeel that is firm in tannin structure. The refreshing acidity frames a graceful finish. Just a classic Brunello di Montalcino.
96 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The gorgeous and full-bodied Goldridge Vyd Pinot Noir is made with fruit grown from 30+ year old vines and harvested in small lots before aging in 45% new French oak. It’s expertly blended to showcase the harmony of the fruit as well as the bright aromatics and luscious blackberry/red berry fruit that have made it a standard-bearer for the Russian River Valley.
95 Points, Decanter
On the nose, herbs and lavender dominate, as notes of meat stew swish in the background. As it continues to open up, various black fruits continue to emerge. The palate is marked by bright acids (perfect for fatty cuisine), black cherry and touch of leather. This is a perfect candidate for the cellar and will be a stellar pull over the next decade.
