Mark Aubert’s wine career was given perhaps the greatest push one can receive when he was hired by Peter Michael Winery in 1989. It was there Aubert had the once in a lifetime opportunity to study directly under Helen Turley at Peter Michael Winery. In the ten years that followed, Aubert would leave Peter Michael first for Colgin, then to Sloane and Futo before ending up as the head winemaker at Bryant Family. But although he loved working with Bryant Family’s signature Cabs, it was the Burgundian varietals that always suited him the most. In 1999, he left Bryant Family to start Aubert wines. Since that time, he has reached every milestone any winemaker could dream of, and there is no signs of stopping now. Considered one of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay winemakers in the U.S. and anywhere else, he has been on the receiving end of twelve 100-point wines so far in his illustrious career.
In 2018, the fruit coming off the vine was fantastic, but much to the chagrin of Mark and the team, drought conditions from previous years kept yields to a minimum. As such, Mark didn’t have enough fruit to bottle all of the single-vineyard wines he normally does. That benefitted the Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir greatly, which has a wonderful mix from his collection of vineyards. 96 Points and a wonderful review from Jeb Dunnuck that you can read below. Beautifully done, the 2018 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast has an incredible sense of purity and finesse while packing plenty of classic California fruit. Vivid ruby-hued with a kaleidoscopic array of framboise, spring flowers, charcoal, toasted spices, and damp earth, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, incredible purity of fruit, integrated acidity, and a great finish. This quintessential Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is already drinking brilliantly yet will keep for at least 7-8 years.

“From the team of Nicolas Glumineau at Pichon Comtesse de Lalande, the 2018 Château De Pez is a gorgeous 2018 that should be on every Bordeaux lover’s radar (and should be a great value as well). Notes of blackcurrants, blueberries, candied violets, and graphite define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, rockingly polished tannins, terrific purity, and a great finish. Robert Foley’s Shelter Cabernet Sauvignon is our most popular Cabernet and finally returns after a few year hiatus. Dark purple on the rim, with aromas of black fruits, smoked meats, baking spice and a touch of sweet oak. It’s a big, round full-bodied wine with a nice acid backbone and a long, smooth finish. You can definitely drink these now (at this point, they’re seven years old) but there’s still a life ahead of them so tuck several away for a few more years.

San Giorgio Ugolforte is the sister winery of Poggio di Sotto. Their 2017 presents a dark core of red and black berry fruit layered with earth, leather, smoke, and herbs. It’s a complex and elegant expression, that presents a full mouthfeel that is firm in tannin structure. The refreshing acidity frames a graceful finish. Just a classic Brunello di Montalcino.
Winemaker Marjorie Gallet’s Effet Papillon Rouge is a terrific blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignane, harvested from the iron rich soil just outside of Rivesaltes at the base of Pyrenees. This one is a vibrant wine, with aromas of wild black raspberries and sweet spices. The mid palate is rich and velvety, with a core of sweet black fruit that finishes fresh, long and silky. At the price, it’s one of the easier no-brainer case buys we offer.
