Mark Aubert’s wine career was given perhaps the greatest push one can receive when he was hired by Peter Michael Winery in 1989. It was there Aubert had the once in a lifetime opportunity to study directly under Helen Turley at Peter Michael Winery. In the ten years that followed, Aubert would leave Peter Michael first for Colgin, then to Sloane and Futo before ending up as the head winemaker at Bryant Family. But although he loved working with Bryant Family’s signature Cabs, it was the Burgundian varietals that always suited him the most. In 1999, he left Bryant Family to start Aubert wines. Since that time, he has reached every milestone any winemaker could dream of, and there is no signs of stopping now. Considered one of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay winemakers in the U.S. and anywhere else, he has been on the receiving end of twelve 100-point wines so far in his illustrious career.
In 2018, the fruit coming off the vine was fantastic, but much to the chagrin of Mark and the team, drought conditions from previous years kept yields to a minimum. As such, Mark didn’t have enough fruit to bottle all of the single-vineyard wines he normally does. That benefitted the Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir greatly, which has a wonderful mix from his collection of vineyards. 96 Points and a wonderful review from Jeb Dunnuck that you can read below. Released for $125/btl, it is available to us today for 20% off that price, $100/btl for America’s greatest answer to Red Burgundy.

Beautifully done, the 2018 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast has an incredible sense of purity and finesse while packing plenty of classic California fruit. Vivid ruby-hued with a kaleidoscopic array of framboise, spring flowers, charcoal, toasted spices, and damp earth, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, incredible purity of fruit, integrated acidity, and a great finish. This quintessential Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is already drinking brilliantly yet will keep for at least 7-8 years.
The old vines are rooted in a mix of sand, clay and limestone, the perfect mix for bringing out finesse, juicy fruit and mineral length in Merlot, Cab Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2015 is a marvel, featuring a deep garnet-purple color and cedar-laced nose of roses, blackberries and Bing cherry. Medium-full bodied, the fragrant fruit gains volume in the mouth, finishing long and mineral. For this price, it’s simply amazing. I dare anybody to disagree!
Situated right next door to the vineyard of the original Super Tuscan Tignanello Vineyard (costs a cool $125 per bottle these days), Poggio al Sole is the hidden gem of Tuscany. If you want to hit a home run with your next pizza night, I mean, really go all the way, you have to serve the latest release of Poggio al Sole’s fabulous Super-Tuscan, Trittico. The new 2018 vintage is in and it’s what you’d expect from the ridiculous 2018 vintage in Tuscany. A truly bold, expressive blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet. Now under $20/bottle for this Pizza Wine special!
The 2019 Abbonna Dolcetto Langhe is a must try on its own– but it is also a showstopper with pizza. Made for those who love their wines dark fruited, this boasts a jet black color with aromas of black cherry, blackberries and baked cake spice. The Langhe Dolcetto is the product of extremely low-yielding but highly concentrated juice that comes from the younger vines of her Estate. Incredibly fun to drink and to smell — it’s also what some would argue is the best compliment to a good pizza pie with some meat on it! If you haven’t tried one of Anna Maria’s Dolcettos, stop missing out!
The 2017 Elouan Oregon Pinot Noir is wonderfully ripe, with vibrant flavors of rich cranberry, sweet cinnamon and bright cherry with just a touch of earthiness. It’s packed with fruit and finishes with soft, refined tannins. It’s a great choice for a summer red, delicious by itself or pair with just about anything.
