93+ Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2024 Gumiel del Mercado Village was produced exclusively with grapes from the family vineyards in their village, all now certified organic (as of 2023), from different soils and places, looking to balance the fruit, freshness and structure through the blend. It’s mostly Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) and around 5% each Garnacha and Albillo Mayor. The grapes were harvested early to keep the freshness and achieve moderate alcohol, each plot fermented separately with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured for 12 months in oak containers of different sizes and shapes—barrels, foudres and vats. It’s a classical fine Ribera; they don’t want green notes or dry tannins, and that’s something you don’t find in any of their wines. It’s harmonious, aromatic and clean, medium-bodied, polished with fine tannins, supple and tasty.
Arrocal Gumiel del Mercado Ribera del Duero Village 2024
93+ Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
This is a gorgeous Ribera del Duero from an estate, so good that they are changing how people make these wines. They harvest early to preserve freshness and keep alcohol levels below 13.5%. The goal is very simple, yet the execution is anything but: let the wine talk about the place, not the winemaking.
This is a beauty made of mostly Tinto Fino with small amounts of Garnacha and Albillo Mayor, grown at up to 3000 feet of elevation above sea level where it actually tastes like high-altitude, elegant wine. No big, oaky, overripe Ribera here. Parker’s Wine Advocate couldn’t get enough, giving it a rave 93+ point review, an enormous score for the category and the pricepoint. They dubbed it “harmonious, aromatic and clean, medium-bodied, polished with fine tannins, supple and tasty.” This is a must-have for my Spanish wine fans. The wines from this region are getting pretty serious. The value has never been more apparent than this moment.

MORE INFO
The most respected publication in the world, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, visited brothers Asier and Rodrigo Calvo at their family estate in Gumiel del Mercado earlier this year and left completely blown away. They called what’s happening at Arrocal nothing short of “an awakening” for Ribera del Duero, a region they believe is finally finding its way to fresher, more precise, more honest wines.
These two talented brothers took over the family winery in 2021 and completely transformed everything in about 18 months. We’re talking indigenous fermentations, neutral oak, a Burgundian approach to their 30-plus village plots, and everything they touch certified organic. They harvest early to preserve freshness and keep alcohol levels below 13.5%. The goal is very simple, yet the execution is anything but: let the wine talk about the place, not the winemaking.
