Bertrand has uncovered 332 different vineyard plots across Soria with vines 30 to 80 years old, many dating from before phylloxera ever existed. The soils are poor but perfect – limestone, decomposed granite, and clay with an abundance of sand that has kept these vines pure for generations. This represents one of the largest concentrations of ungrafted vines in Europe. That combination of rawness, power and elegance creates something magical with these Spanish red grapes.

The 2023 Antidoto is made entirely from Tempranillo, vines grown over 332 plots at high altitude in different villages across Soria, 30 to 80 years old. After a short maceration of five days, fermentation takes place in stainless steel before the wine is aged five months in 600-liter French oak barrels, 25% new. The wine begs for tapas, so lovely is its supple texture and crisp red and black cherry fruit. Made in a modern style, it’s not about power as much as place, showcasing the ability to make great wine from great vineyards and grapes. It retains remarkable freshness throughout a medium-bodied core of finesse. Drink now and for the next 10 years.

The 2023 AntÃdoto is made with fruit from old vines in Soria, Ribera del Duero. Grapes are selected by vine age and fermented in steel with a small amount of residual sugar (1020 density), then the wine was aged in a mix of new and used 600-liter French oak barrels. Aromas of black cherry, plum and a soft floral note emerge over gentle oak. The palate is polished, with fine-grained tannins and juicy flow. The remote eastern reaches of Ribera del Duero – a province called Soria – is home to some of the most extraordinary vineyards in all of Spain. We’re talking about ungrafted vines that have survived 150 years without phylloxera, sitting on the “rooftop of Ribera” where cooler temperatures create something magical.
Here’s the story: when young French winemaker Bertrand Sourdais first brought Soria to light with his pioneering work at Atauta, he created wines that stunned the Spanish wine world. But when Atauta was sold during Spain’s economic downturn, Bertrand could have walked away. Instead, the pull of those ancient vineyards was too strong. He returned to create Antidoto – Spanish for “antidote” – as his answer to the heavy-handed, terroir-less wines flooding Ribera del Duero.
