Sobilane Grenache-Syrah Cotes Catalanes 2023

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast

“Sexy” and “seductive” are not usually adjectives I use to describe wine. But for some reason, when I taste this wine, it’s hard to think of better words to better describe this silky red from Sobilane. This is a 60% Grenache, 40% Syrah blend from the Eastern Pyrenees in southern France. It tastes like a $30 or $40/btl but our price today is a whole heck of a lot better than that! Wine Enthusiast gave it 91 points calling out “Black plum, black raspberry, blackberry and aromas of hibiscus fill the nose along with pomegranate and dried violet blossom.” But it was Jeb Dunnuck who probably nailed it best when he wrote that this reminds him of a wine from iconic Jean-Marc Lafage, “Ripe yet incredibly pure and charming.”

Original price was: $25.00.Current price is: $15.50.

This elegant blend of Grenache (60%) and Syrah (40%) demands appropriately matched company. Black plum, black raspberry, blackberry and aromas of hibiscus fill the nose along with pomegranate and dried violet blossom. The fulsome palate has a streak of floral purity that elevates and enhances the fruit foundation.

Domaine la Sobilane is located near Perpignan, in the Eastern Pyrenees region between the villages of Canet and Saint-Nazaire in the heart of the Roussillon in southern France. La Sobilane’s oldest vintages date from the end of the Second World War and feature some gnarly vines with serious chracter that have roots meters and meters below the soil.

This is a 60% Grenache, 40% Syrah blend from the Eastern Pyrenees in southern France near Perpignan. The vineyards sit on thick red clay mixed with rounded stones from alluvial deposits – the kind of soil that keeps the grapes fresh even with all that sunshine and altitude. Winemaker Hervé Sabardeil hand-harvests at peak ripeness, then uses both traditional maceration and carbonic maceration to pull out the best character from each grape. Everything’s aged in concrete tanks, which is why this wine has such purity and personality.
