Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico 2022
93 Points, James Suckling – 91 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
This is a food-friendly number with aromas of strawberries, raspberries, fresh red fruit, and baking spices. Medium-bodied, organically grown and aged one year in a large cask, the Sangiovese here is elegant, pure and refreshing. It’s just a great bottle of wine, especially at our special price.
Suckling called it “delicious, well-rounded and velvety… Juicy and velvety with elegance and a pure character.” Vinous praised it as “aromatic, light on its feet and gracious.” Dunnuck noted its “polished and refreshing palate with ripe red berry fruit, refined tannins, and a lovely finish.”

MORE INFO
Every year, we offer Castello di Volpaia’s Chianti Classico Riserva at one of the best prices in the country. It’s a perennial fan favorite and consistently garners rave reviews from Nicholas customers and wine critics alike.
But everything changed a few years back when Wine Spectator gave them the highest rating a Chianti Classico has ever received, rating it even higher than Castello di Ama with its $400+ price tag. Ever since then, getting an allocation from one of our favorites has become a heck of a lot more challenging.
At 2,000 feet above sea level, this is one of the highest-elevation wineries in the entire Chianti region. Produced within the 11th-century historic walled village of Volpaia in Radda in Chianti, these hand-harvested Sangiovese grapes benefit from cooler temperatures and dramatic day-night temperature swings that preserve acidity and freshness.
