Paitin Barbaresco Basarin 2022

96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

This is one of the crown jewels of Barbaresco – a single-vineyard expression from the Basarin cru where the communes of Neive, Treiso, and Barbaresco converge. Steep, sun-kissed, south-facing slopes that yield Nebbiolo with a rare combination of elegance and structure. Parker’s Wine Advocate just gave the 2022 vintage 96 points, calling it a “wine of noted intensity” with “blue flowers, underbrush, iron and earthy roots.”

The Basarin vineyard has sandy soils surrounded by cooling forest, and the 50-year-old vines produce wines that prioritize sharpness and elegance over weight. Parker describes this 2022 with “fleeting notes of iris, lilac and violet that are very beautiful” – the kind of aromatic complexity that makes serious Barbaresco collectors weak in the knees.

96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The Paitin 2022 Barbaresco Basarin is a wine of noted intensity with blue flowers, underbrush, iron and earthy roots. This site has sandy soils and is surrounded by cooling forest with southern exposures. The vines are 50 years old, and this complex expression ends with fleeting notes of iris, lilac and violet that are very beautiful.”

Paitin was already one of only a handful of top Barbaresco producers in the region, crafting stunning age-worthy Nebbiolos before the brothers, Giovanni and Silvano began a revolution of the property.

They built a new winery and cellar, returned to making Nebbiolo the traditional way, but their biggest move was bringing in Dante Scaglione in 2010 – fresh off a 16-year stint at the helm of Bruno Giacosa. Lucky for us, he didn’t bring along the three hundred dollar price tags, just his insane standards for quality.
