Chateau Lafite Rothschild Pauillac 2020

100 Pts, Jeb Dunnuck – 100 Pts, James Suckling – 100 Pts, Wine Enthusiast – 99 Pts, Decanter

This is the king – the 2020 Château Lafite Rothschild in a vintage that earned a flawless trifecta of 100-point scores. What a brilliant expression of the estate’s legendary terroir. The bouquet is captivating and tightly wound with of classic Lafite aromas: crushed blackcurrants, graphite, and cedar, with underlying complexities of smoked tobacco, cigar box, and freshly sharpened pencils.

On the attack, it unveils its stunning pedigree with a sense of both profound depth and elegance. It is flawlessly balanced, with an incredible mid-palate and a broad, layered structure framed by ultra-fine, perfect tannins that “melt into the wine,” as James Suckling noted. While it carries immense power and concentration, the wine’s greatest gift is the future that it offers. Dunnuck argued that it will be a ‘Century Wine’. I don’t know how I could disagree…but I would probably open mine before that!

100 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“The 2020 Château Lafite-Rothschild is a sensational effort checking in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that hit 12.8% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.94. As Lafite as Lafite gets, this ultra-classic reveals a dense ruby/plum hue as well as a tight, yet layered bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, freshly sharpened pencils, graphite, and subtle spice. Flawlessly balanced, deep, concentrated, and layered, it has an incredible mid-palate, building, perfect tannins, and a finish that leaves you salivating. Refined, elegant, and perfection are the buzz words here. Unfortunately, it’s not for the instant gratification crowd, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this require 15 years to hit the early stages of its prime drinking window. It will probably hit its 100th birthday in fine form.”

100 Points, James Suckling
Amazing aromas here with tobacco, crushed stone, cigar box, currants, tar, and lead pencil, as well as spices, iron, and dried ginger. Medium- to full-bodied, with a density and tightness. Very compact and complex. Racy. Delicacy with strength. Orange peel undertones. A wine to contemplate. You must understand it to understand the great Lafites of the past and those of the future.

100 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Structured, dense and with great concentration, this wine is magnificent. Its black fruits and density indicate the power of the wine and its longevity. At the same time, the wine has the elegance that is always associated with this estate. Drink from 2028.
100 Points, Antonio Galloni
A towering, thrilling wine, the 2016 Mouton Rothschild is unbelievably beautiful today. Aromatics, fruit density and vertical structure all come together. In the glass, the 2016 is remarkably vivid and powerful, and yet a gentler, more feminine side emerges with time in the glass. The intense, mineral, savory profile recalls the 1986, but the 2016 has more grace, inner sweetness and sophistication than that wine. Even so, the 2016 is going to need at least a number of years in bottle before it starts drinking well, although it won’t be the bruiser the 1986 remains to this day. This is breathtaking wine from Mouton, Tecnical Director Philippe Dhalluin and his team.

100 Points, Lisa Perotti-Brown, Wine Independent
The 2016 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, with the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot vinified together. It has a very deep purple-black color and slowly slides out of the glass with spicy notes of Sichuan pepper, cloves and cinnamon stick giving way to a core of perfumed black fruits and florals—blackcurrant cordial, candied violets, blackberry compote, rose hips and black plums—plus suggestions of espresso, damp soil, tar and beef drippings. Medium-bodied, the palate is very firmly structured and jam-packed with latent energy about to burst, offering superbly ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness to support the intense floral and black fruit layers and finishing very long and very minerally. Powerful, profound wine.

Château Lafite Rothschild is not just a wine; it’s a living legend. As a Premier Cru Classé and a titan of the Pauillac appellation, it has reigned at the pinnacle of Bordeaux for centuries. The story began in the 17th century when the Ségur family meticulously developed the vineyards, and by the 18th century, Lafite was already dubbed “The King’s Wine,” gracing the tables of Versailles.

This rich history culminated in 1855, when it was officially ranked as one of the four original First Growths, a testament to its unparalleled quality and price. This reputation was further solidified when the prestigious Rothschild family acquired the estate in 1868, cementing its status as a symbol of luxury, power, and prestige.

The true magic of Lafite, however, lies in its extraordinary terroir. The vineyards are blessed with a deep bed of fine gravel over a limestone subsoil, a unique geological makeup that forces the vines to dig deep for nutrients. This, combined with a meticulous focus on old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon (which often dominates the blend), produces wines of incredible finesse, aromatic complexity, and a signature graphite-and-cedar character.
