Foucher Lebrun is a third generation operation that has been successful in the wine business for over a century now. Besides the excellent quality of the vineyards and the organically grown fruit they select, the secret weapon here is that the wines and cuvees are selected by Jean Mounard a very well known former “Fine + Rare” wine merchant from Paris whose palate was formed by years of tasting and selling such wines as DRC, Mouton-Rothchild and Leflaive.
Located about 20 miles northeast of the town of Sancerre in the village of Alligny-Cosne, Maison Foucher makes their ‘Petit Le Mont’ Sancerre with grapes from the villages of Sancerre, Chavignol (near Monts Damnés) and d’Amignyt just like the big brother bottling. The only difference is those are always blended with some Sauvignon Blanc from outside Sancerre’s town lines in Touraine, so Sancerre isn’t on the label, which cuts the price and automatically turns this into one of the most killer values anywhere.
With wonderfully chalky limestone soil, the wines have a solid core, with a wonderful roundness as well as that irresistible mineral streak. I get bright, steely notes of green apple, some stone fruit, jasmine blossom and green melon with soaring aromatics. This is one of those wines that grows on you with each sip and is hard to put down. This would go well with just about any food you want to pair it with, but it does scream for fresh seafood in particular.

“The 2018 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard marks the beginning of winemaker Joe Nielsen’s tenure at the winery. Pouring a medium yellow with a light golden hue, it’s most reserved of the flight aromatically at the moment, with yellow chamomile flowers, ripe peach, beeswax, and white flowers. Full-bodied, it retains excellent tension and focus on the palate, with apricot, orange zest, and a savory finish with a bit of spice. I suspect this will come around and open with time. Drink 2024-2030.” -Jeb Dunnuck

“Soaring lemon cream aromatics accented by notes of sea spray, lemongrass and beeswax mark this coastal Chardonnay from Flowers on the Sonoma Coast. The palate is fresh and linear. Oyster shell salinity, bee pollen and grilled lemon make for a savoury balance with delicate crushed chalk minerality.”
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2022 beams freshness and comes packed with a delightful energy in its youth. It has a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
