Perhaps no name in Montalcino rings louder or carries more weight than Biondi Santi. The famed family is now on their seventh generation of winemakers and has at no point slowed down their dominance in producing the purest (and many would say best) expressions of Sangiovese Grosso.
To say they are steeped in tradition would be an understatement. Generations before Jacopo, the family forever cemented their legacy in Italian wine – by essentially inventing Brunello. With over 200 years experience making Brunello – they also have their own proprietary Sangiovese clone – BBS11 – another secret to the family’s success.
But tradition only takes you so far– it’s the ones who buck trends and take the largest leaps who make the biggest splash. But many were still surprised when Jacopo began searching outside of Montalcino for a ‘better place’ to grow the family’s famed Sangiovese.
It took 10 years, but finally found the spot and purchased 1,300 acres (530 hectares) as well as an 11th century castle named Castello di Montepò, in Southern Tuscany– in what is now the scorching hot region Maremma.
At the time, the land was mostly used for grain and close to a thousand sheep. Just one hectare was used for grape cultivation but Jacopo knew what the land could produce with his precious BBS11 Sangiovese.
“This terroir has microclimates. It’s a Romanée Conti. Here are many slopes, like a little Montalcino, but 100 kilometers south and 15 kilometers [nine miles] from the sea.” Jacobo told Forbes magazine.

This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
