Ever since the winery’s start in 1990, the goal at Quintessa was always to have the most beautiful wine estate in the world, with the best winemaking team making the best wines. That much is clear. The winery is always at the top of the Napa Visit list– a picturesque 270-acre plot in Rutherford right in the heart of Napa Valley with a massive, state of the art tasting room and 17,000 square foot wine caves on the premises.
On the winemaking side, the team includes superstar consultant Michel Rolland, joining Andy Erickson (Screaming Eagle/Leviathan) and superstar young winemaker, Rebekah Wineburg who joined the team in 2015 after stints at Staglin and Rudd.
The 2015 Quintessa is a beautifully layered masterpiece, loaded with seduction and tension. It starts with a bust of jammy black fruits and baked pie and finishes with dense yet silky tannins. When you pop the cork you’re treated to aromas of black cherry clove, bay leaves, and cocoa. The finely grained tannins harmoniously work together with the dense fruit delivering a mouthful of vivacious fruit and lively acidity that finish long and complete. This will drink like a dream for decades to come.
This comes with the usual high marks from the expert reviewers, but most of them tasted this a few years ago. I had this one the other day and it was absolutely killer. I wonder if any of the 100-point wines from the 2015 vintage could possibly match up with this one today.

Aromas of blue fruits, blackberries, tile and lead pencil. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh, bright finish. Layered and intense with white-pepper and salt undertones. Love the finish to this racy young wine. Beautiful blue fruits! Drink in 2020 and onwards. From biodynamic grapes.
96 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Proprietary Red Wine has a very deep purple color and notes of crushed rocks, dusty earth and iron ore over blackcurrants and black cherries, plus hints of tapenade, bay leaves, underbrush and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bursting with densely packed, youthful black fruits, framed by finely grained tannins and refreshing acidity, finishing long and mineral laced.

Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
100 Pts, International Wine Report – 98 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 98 Pts, James Suckling
“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
