Tenuta Sette Ponti is a historic estate in Chianti in the heart of Tuscany. The estate has an incredible history unlike anybody else’s as it was first planted by Prince Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta and Viceroy of Ethiopia in 1935 to celebrate conquering the Ethiopian Empire. The vineyard was originally labeled “Vigna dell’Impero” (Vineyard of the Empire) and is home to a very famous, ancient Sangiovese clone which is the only of its kind.
A few decades later – the property was bought by Architect Alberto Moretti Cuseri from the Princess (the daughter of Prince Amedeo). He immediately began transforming the enormous 750 acre property into the marvel it is today.
Vineyards, acres of livestock roaming around and a ton of mixed agriculture, now make up this enormous estate. Wine production only started in the 1990’s, but it found immediate success and has done wonders to spread the legacy of Tenuta Sette Ponti.
Today, they are known for their work with Reds and Sangiovese especially. The ‘Crognolo’, today’s offer, was the first label at this historic estate. It’s made from the clones from the estate’s oldest vineyard, and helped drive the reputation here as one of the nation’s best producers. That was furthered by the release of the ‘Oreno’ a wine widely considered one of the best Tuscany bottlings of any kind.

95 Points, James Suckling
The purity of fruit is impressive in this wine with currants, orange peel, peaches and lemon in the nose and on the palate. Full-bodied yet compressed and agile. Flavorful finish. Reserved now, but if you give it a year or two it will really deliver.
93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Ultra fresh juicy cherries with more delicate aromas of violets and rose petals on the nose roll onto a palate rich with more cherries and berries balanced by earthy, astringent notes of soil, branches and roots and a finish of bitter cocoa and anise.
#3 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021
96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 95 Points, Wine Spectator
We are one of the very few folks who have Wine Spectator’s #3 Wine of the Year. This is definitely not one to miss. The 2016 vintage showcases this prized vineyard in all its glory; notes of wild black fruit, thyme, mint, eucalyptus, and bay are lifted and enjoyed with the polished tannin and mouthwatering freshness of this wine. Regarded as one of the best vintages in the last few decades, the 2016 Martha’s Vineyard has been aged to perfection for immediate enjoyment at release and will continue to reward for the next 20+ years.
90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
97 Points (Cellar Selection), Wine Enthusiast
“Quietly powerful, dense with alluring oak spices and late-picked fruit flavors, this full-bodied, velvet-textured Cabernet-dominant blend is generous and inviting to drink, but also balanced and structured for the long haul. Concentrated, deep and layered, it is meant for drinking with appreciative friends or family in the future. Best from 2027–2040.”
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
