“Here’s an exciting new submission from the house of Ratti. Serradenari is a large MGA and one of only a few cru sites that exist on the western slope under the village of La Morra. The 2019 Barolo Serradenari has a more botanical-smelling bouquet, and by that I mean that it has lavender bud, thyme, aniseed and the kinds of flowers and herbs that you might find in a fragrant garden. It is nuanced and delicate and framed by a light note of ash or crushed limestone.”

2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.

“The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is unoaked and dry and comes in at 13.1% alcohol. Like the other 2022s in this report, this has a crisp and wonderfully fresh feel. It is tightly wound and not quite as vegetal as some but always leaning to freshness. There is plenty of zing and zest on the finish and it makes this work. For all that freshness and elegance, it has reasonably good concentration and feels substantial in its youth (in bottle only about 60 days when tasted). This is a beauty in its style and on its own terms. It’s another success. “

“The 2019 La Gaffelière wafts from the glass with a rich bouquet of blackberries and cherries mingled with subtle hints of burning embers and loamy soil that’s framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, it’s a concentrated, vibrant wine built around bright acids and fine, powdery tannins. Its vivid fruit tones and classical balance make this Cabernet Franc-rich blend a promising candidate for sustained bottle age. Anyone who has tasted the great wines this estate produced in the 1950’s and 1960’s knows how great this site can be; and with stricter selection as well as the elimination of fruit from vines growing on the plain from the blend, that potential appears to be being unleashed at last.” -Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

A super highly decorated Ribera del Duero that serves as the perfect intro to the category if you’re not familiar. In The Wine Advocate’s 92-point write-up they call this a “bread-and-butter wine,” Spanish expert Luis Gutiérrez called it “ripe without excess, with very integrated oak and velvety palate with silky tannins.” Hard to argue with anything there. I also found it beaming with energy and impeccably balanced, which added to my own admiration.

If you’re thinking “didn’t I see this wine in the Wine Spectator Top 100 last year as well?” Yes, yes you do. The Shiraz that First Drop has been making in the Barossa Valley in South Australia has been nothing short of extraordinary, and with their ridiculously reasonable price points, it’s no surprise this returns to Wine Spectator’s Top 50 Wines list once again. It’s a complex Shiraz with black cherry notes that lead off followed by blackberry, baking spices and some bramble. It’s a vibrant and juicy wine that has a nice little spicy kick to it at the end.
