John Anthony Truchard is the son of famed Napa Valley winemaker Tony Truchard who is approaching 50 successful years at the family’s namesake winery. He spent most of his childhood helping his father in the vineyard, including driving the tractor and picking grapes starting at age 12(!) but eventually ran off to become an IP lawyer in the Big Apple.
But the wine industry (and his mother) beckoned him home. When he finally made the call, he dove in with both feet. He returned to Carneros to help run the family business, learn all about vineyard management and take on General Manager responsibilities.
Then – a few short years later – he’d hang up his own shingle, founding the John Anthony Family of Wines and he developed the concept of an unapologetically Napa Chard called, “Butter” that would grow to become one of the world’s most popular wines.
But like many recent Napa upstarts, the opportunities in Paso were too enormous to ignore, so he took his executive winemaker, Jeff Kandarian (Justin, King Estate) along with him and is launching his flagship Cabernet. After tasting it, I can assure you that the sky’s the limit.

Fresh off its feature as one of Wine Spectator’s ‘Exciting California Values Under $25’, winemaker Matt Cline looks to stay hot with his release of the 2019 Contra Costa Zinfandel. This one is a beauty crafted off old-vines that are now between 110-140 years in age. There’s a ton of darker fruits that drive this one with a dusting of baking spice. The fruit is pure, fresh and long making it both delicious on its own or terrific with a burger, BBQ ribs, or grilled leg of lamb. Crazy cheap for what is in the bottle, load up!
95 Points, Vinous
“The 2021 Syrah-Grenache is another fabulous wine from Tyler and Rachel Eck. Bright, savory, and vibrant, the 2021 bristles with energy from the get go. Lively acids run through a core of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, cloves and menthol. The 2021 is deep and full of flavor yet also light on its feet. Today, it is positively stellar.” -Antonio Galloni
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
Chad’s 2020 McKinley Springs Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is drop dead gorgeous. Those of you who were lucky to catch our sneak preview when we put it in our Gobbler Case can attest. Dark purple to the rim with aromas of black fruits, violets, creme de cassis and a hint of spice. On the palate, full-bodied, round and juicy with elegance and the gorgeous, pure fruit– red and black currants, blackberries and a touch of sweet tobacco.
