In 1970, Enrique Forner founded Marqués de Cáceres Unión, a historic alliance of growers in the village of Cenicero in the Rioja Alta subregion of Rioja. The pioneering Forner family has been devoted to the wine trade for five generations and has been a major player since they first started late in the 19th century.
Their search for the best vine growers and vineyards in Rioja and the introduction of a Bordeaux concept revolutionized the production and business model of the entire region. They work with one single objective: producing the highest quality wines. Today this obsession continues to be the driving force of Cristina Forner, the fifth generation of this distinguished wine family.
Cristina’s Brut Cava is a sneaky great value. It has a ton of energy and lift from the tiny bubbles, leading with a bouquet of citrus fruits and notes of freshly baked brioche. The mouth is fun and round with great balance, harmony and structure. I’m not sure you’re going to find much better value than this one.

This is a Nicholas Faithful favorite. Even though it’s technically a non-vintage it was last disgorged in the 2020 vintage. La Cravantine, is a sparkling rosé of 100% Cabernet Franc, bone-dry, super fresh and with bubbles so tiny and fine, it puts most “real” Champagne to shame. Appealing strawberry and mineral scents are encased in a firm structure with a dry and spicy quality in the palate. This wine is incredibly versatile – perfect with just about any fish, fried food, or do like I do and enjoy it on it’s own.

“The 2019 Brut from Alta Langa, is remarkably pretty, with a delicate blend of peaches and young mango complicated by hints of incense and spice. This displays round, soothing textures and juicy acidity with a core of tart orchard fruits that add a lovely tension toward the close. It finishes with medium length, leaving a twang of sour citrus and a steely minerality that adds a tactile touch. The 2019 is beautifully crafted and displays incredible balance. Well done. This is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay”

“Their regional Garnacha 2021 Rico-Nuevo was produced with grapes on granite soils from different vineyards in the villages of Burgohondo and El Barraco. This is subtle and pure, defined and clean, with moderate alcohol and ripeness, vibrant and fresh, with the fine granularity of the granite soils. They had to sort and select the grapes because it was a wet harvest, then fermented with some full clusters (less than in 2020) and kept the wine in stainless steel until bottled. Jose Manuel Martinez’s flagship Albarino is his ‘Turonia’ bottling. This is age-worthy Albarino that you probably didn’t even know existed. It’s sourced exclusively from decades-old Albarino vines that are precariously set in hillsides of sheer slate. Every vine is over 30 years of age, and Manuel Martinez only chooses the best parcels for the bottling. It should be no wonder then that such a ridiculous good value would make its way into Wine Spectator’s Top 100.
