Saint Francis has built an incredible reputation in Sonoma County in large part because of Katie, but also due to their perfect location. Their vineyards are ideally located in the cooler parts of Sonoma County, the areas particularly susceptible to the Pacific Ocean morning fog.
The Pinot Noir made here has more time to naturally ripen on the vine, imparting deep, concentrated flavors while also retaining gorgeous natural acidity.
The best part about tasting with Katie was how down-to-earth she was. I wish all my tastings were like that. We talked about the wine industry, her region, and what the future of California wine holds, without once mentioning scores or any of that. My kind of conversation.
But, after doing a little digging, my favorite wine of the tasting, the 2021 Sonoma County Pinot Noir from Saint Francis, turned out to be a highly decorated wine that deserves to be gulped down by the Nicholas Wines masses. Not only is it delicious and fairly priced, it comes with 97 points and a Double Gold from the North Coast Wine Challenge last year, as well as a 92-point review from Wine Enthusiast.

97 Points (Double Gold), 2023 North Coast Wine Challenge
The 2021 Sonoma County bottling has a great color along with balance with firm tannins and tons of complexity.

A plummy richness is backed by some raspberry snap in this full-bodied, focused and flavorful wine. Vivid black cherries, cloves and a touch of toasted oak give the wine plenty to savor.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
