Our latest restaurant wine list rescue and our first contender for White Wine Value of The Year is wound up little Vermentino from Piero Mancini. Why is Vermentino at the top of so many Michelin-starred wine lists?
Well – there’s a very special thing that happens when Vermentino is grown in the proper place, within the nearly constant salt water sea breezes. It takes on a salty, minerality that helps it pair so beautifully with great cuisine. Take it one step further and pair it with fresh seafood – and the whole experience is just lights out.
Nowhere is Vermentino better than within the Gallura region in Sardinia and few if any in Sardinia do it better than Piero Mancini. The prized jewel of his lineup, the Vermentino di Gallura, is a wonderful expression of the unique terroir from which its created– granite dominated soil set near the ocean in the Mediterranean.
It’s a glowing wine- one that is simply delightful to drink. Bright, vibrant notes of white peach, nectarine and candied apple with hints of the ocean brine, a chiseled backbone and a wonderfully tight finish.

90 Points, Vinous
The 2019 Vermentino di Gallura presents a seductive bouquet of ripe peaches and pears offset by hints of brown spice and white smoke. It’s medium-bodied yet deeply textural, ushering in a soothing wave of ripe orchard fruits, motivated by a core of juicy acidity. Nothing is out of place in this harmonious Vermentino as it finishes savory, salty and bristling with underlying tension. Give the 2019 another year of cellaring, and then enjoy with abandon.

It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
92 Points, Wine Enthusiast
This is a huge favorite of folks in the Red Bank area. It’s a bold, unapologetic Chardonnay with juicy notes of peach, lemon sorbet, baking spice and vanilla with a rich, creamy middle and plenty of natural acidity to balance it out. The lemon vanilla finish is perhaps the wine’s calling card or the sheer drinkability of it all. Either way, it’s a Chard that people adore. It’s no wonder Wine Enthusiast called this, “a big win for fans of this bold style”.
